Free art under open licences: look, share, reuse.

nonprofitart is a platform for artworks under free licences. The site describes itself as “a home for open art” and brings together masterpieces, digital art and photography that you may look at, download and reuse, as long as you follow the licence terms of each work. Its guiding idea is stated on the site itself: culture should not sit behind paywalls.

Idea & philosophy

Free licences are often hard to read in everyday life. That is why every work on nonprofitart shows its licence, a ready-made attribution text to copy (as plain text or HTML) and a link to the original source. A dedicated explainer page describes the most common licences in simple words: with CC0 the creators have waived all rights, public domain works such as those of old masters are no longer or never were protected by copyright, CC BY only asks for credit to the creator, and with CC BY-SA derivative works must be shared under the same licence. The site points out explicitly that this is a non-binding summary and not legal advice. The goal is a collection where you do not just find images but also know with confidence what you may do with them. In future, artists are meant to publish their own work under a free licence; for now the “Submit a work” page only shows what is planned. The design feels like a museum: warm paper tones, a serif typeface for headlines, a terracotta accent and a dark mode that works like a dimmed exhibition room. The home page greets visitors with “Art that belongs to everyone” (German original: “Kunst, die allen gehört.”) over a full-width artwork.

Contents & features

  • Discover home page with selected works, a random discovery (“Surprise me”) and rows such as Trending, Most loved or Newly added
  • Gallery with filters for category (Historical, Digital, Photography), epoch, licence, source, medium, artist, tags and orientation
  • Public-domain-only filter and year range for targeted searching
  • Four views: masonry, even grid, list with details and wall
  • Detail view with zoom, fullscreen, keyboard control and related works
  • Licence note and ready-made attribution to copy as text or HTML
  • Artist directory from A to Z and a “Licences explained” page
  • Personal collection with likes and saved works, stored only in your own browser
  • German and English, light and dark mode
  • According to the site, images are drawn from sources such as Wikimedia, the Rijksmuseum, the Metropolitan Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art

Status

The site is online but carries a “Development preview” note: images are hotlinked from their original sources for development only, and submitting your own works is not yet possible. That is why the status here is “In development”.

Note: Note: the licence explanations are a non-binding summary and not legal advice. Before reuse, always read the full licence text and the terms of the original source.
